No. 229 - THE PENNY MAGAZINE - Oct. 31, 1835

* The Bairam, which is also called Id-filr, or "the breaking of fast," follows the long Lent of the Ramadan, and may be compared to the Catholic Easter. This holiday lasts three days. The Courban-Bairam, or "the Feast of Sacrifices," falls seventy days after the first, and lasts four days. The Mevloud is a festival instituted by Mourad III., in 1588, in honour of the nativity of the prophet, but it is only a festival for the sultan and his court, and not for the people. It only last a day, and seems to consist almost entirely in a visit to the interior of the mosque of Sultan Achmet.
