Naturalization Records
Many of our immigrant ancestors formalized their move to the United States
through the naturalization process. Documents relating to naturalization include information
revealing date and place of birth, parents' names, former citizenship and former address.
Many Naturalization Certificates provide photographs of the new citizenship.

The certificates themselves do not convey much information: The real benefit comes from
finding the accompanying application materials which document family names;
relatives; and previous residence.
One of the advantages of naturalization records is that they often are housed in
county archives making them more easily accessible to family researchers who
can't make it to Washington. That makes local retrieval the best place to start.
