Using Federal Documents In Genealogical Research

This page is intended to review the types of government information available to novice genealogists. Each time an ancestor interacted with the United States Government, the encounter likely was documented. Retrieving these documents can be rewarding in many ways. You may confirm those "who was where and when?" questions. Or perhaps the documents provide valuable leads or colorful details about your ancestors.

With the exception of military records, the documents are available from microfilm reproductions of the originals. Because of faded print and uneven focus many documents are barely legible. Finding these documents is challenging, but rewarding. This page provides a brief tour of record types and a few hints on how to begin your investigation.
