CROCHET—LACE COLLAR

Raworth's crochet thread, No. 70.

EXPLANATION.– c h, chain stitch; d c, double crochet; s c, single crochet; l, long stitch; d l, double long stitch; t l, treble long stitch; c s, common stitch.

THE, OVALS, FORMING THE BORDER.– 1st round. 10 c s, 1l s into 8th stitch, *, 2 c s, miss 2, 1l s into 3d; repeat from * twice more; then 5 c s, s c into last c s.

2d round.––5 c s, d c into 1st space; 5 c s, d c into next; repeat all round, and, at the end spaces, d c into them twice, after the 5 c s.

3d round.–– S c up three of the 5 c s, *, 6 c s, s c round the 5 c s of last round; repeat from * all round and into the end spaces; 5 c s, d e again into same space.

4th round.––1 d c, 2 l s, 3 d l s, 2 l s, 1 d e round every chain of 6 in last round.

5th round.––6 c s, s c into centre d l s of scallop; 6 c s, s c into same stitch; 6 c s, s c into s c stitch between the 6 c s of 3d round; repeat all round.

Twenty-two ovals are required for the collar.

THE SMALL FLOWERS, WHICH FORM THE SPRIGS. – 9 c s; unite; *, 6 c s, d c round the ring; repeat from * five more times.

In next round, 1 d c, 5 l s, 1 d c into every space formed by 6 c s.

THIRTY of these flowers are necessary.

THE LEAVES.––30 c s, d c back fifteen of these; *, 5 c s, 1 d l s into last d c; 1 l s into next; 1 d c into next, repeat from * three times more; 3 c s, s c into top stitch; 3 c s, s c into 3d stitch down the other side; 1 d c into same stitch; *, 1 l s into next; 1 d l s into next; 5 c s, 1 d c into next; repeat from + three more times, finishing with 5 c s, 1 d c.

Pass the thread under the stalk; s c up three of the 1st, 5 c s, 7 c s, s c into the next point; 7 c s, s c into next; repeat all round. Fasten off.

Commence again on the same stitch as last round; 8 c s, s c into centre of 1st 7 c s of last round; 8 c s, s c into middle of next 7; repeat once more; 7 c s, s c into 3d of next 7; 7 c s, s c into 6th of the same ?; 8 e s, s c into 2d stitch beyond the point; 7 c s, s c into 3d stitch from last; ? c s, s c into middle of next?; *, 8 c s, s c into centre of next 7; repeat from * twice more. S c the remaining 15 for stalk.

Twelve of these leaves must be worked; four with fifteen stitches for the stalk, and eight with ten stitches.

Tack these flowers and leaves upon colored paper, wrong side up; fasten the ovals together by uniting the small loops. Arrange the sprigs as in the ILLUSTRATION, and unite them by bars of fine thread passed from the edges of the flowers to the ovals and each other, and working round the same thread a few times to form a twist.

Make a chain the length of the collar, and work 1 I s, 2 c s, miss 2 along this chain; then *, 4 l s into space; 3 r. c, miss 1 space; repeat from *.

Tack this on the paper, and unite it to the flowers by the same twisted bars.
