Day to Day Operations

Experimental Section

In order to attempt to improve the efficiency of the Mill Seat Landfill, the federal government has recently provided a grant to implement an experiment that will attempt to hasten the breakdown of the refuse in the landfill. The experiment is scheduled to begin sometime within the next few months. The goal is to prolong the lifespan ot the landfill by reusing waste leachate obtained from the perforated HDPE pipes

Once the leachate from the compacted garbage has entered the piping system, a percentage of it is carried to storage tanks located at the foot of the landfill. It is then pumped up to the top of the landfill where it is rechanneled throughout the double composite lining system. It is hoped that this rechanneled leachate will speed the decomposition process, prolonging the lifespan of the landfill. There is also a possibility that methane will be added to the leachate to help enhance decomposition.

Whether or not this procedure will work is unknown and won't be known until the turn of the century. If there is a significant change in the speed of decomposition, landfills around the country may be required to install this new system.
