Safety
In addition to disposing of the waste as efficiently as possible, a vital task that Mill Seat excels at is environmental safety including:
Daily covering of refuse: At the end of every day, 4-6 inches of dirt is placed on top of the trash to prevent the wind or scavengers from transporting the refuse outside of the landfill area. Additionally, this prevents noisome fumes from emanating into surrounding areas.
Hazardous waste: Before any disposal of the trash is allowed to take place, Mill Seat personnel ensure that the truchs are free of any hazardous waste that would pose a risk to the environment. (ie... toxic barrels, paints, industrial waste, etc..)
Litter protectant: Currently under construction is a 40 foot high wall (composed of telephone poles and canvas) which will ensure that littering of surrounding areas does not take place during working hours while the dirt cover has been removed for layering of additional refuse.
Ground water monitoring: Located throughout different areas in the landfill, ground water monitoring stations are strategically located to detect any contamination of the ground water below.
In order to attempt to improve the efficiency of the Mill Seat Landfill, the federal government has recently provided a grant to implement an experiment that will attempt to hasten the breakdown of the Leachate in the landfill. The experiment is scheduled to begin sometime within the next few months and will be monitored through 1999 to determine the productivity and feasibility of such a project
