Hawaii has significant, yet relatively
untapped, renewable energy resources and energy-efficiency potential.
Biomass, wind, solar, geothermal, hydroelectric, and ocean thermal and wave
resources can provide clean, stable sources of energy supply. The Island's
energy savings potential would likely allow utilities to defer construction
of additional fossil fuel-fired power plants by reducing electricity demand
through conservation and increased energy efficiency. Efficiency gains in
the transportation sector are also possible. The Hawaii Energy Strategy
Program has outline the following goals:
Increased diversification of fuels and sources of supplies of these fuels;
Increased energy efficiency and conservation;
Development and implementation of regulated and non-regulated energy development strategies with the least possible overall cost to Hawaii's society;
Establishment of a comprehensive energy policy analysis, planning and evaluation system;
Increased use of indigeneous, renewable energy resources;
