98 Adams Street
A brick house that was saved from the wrecking ball.
History:
- This house was built for Thomas Weddle over 140 years ago at the corner of Exchange Street and Glaslow Street, across from the low-lying land of the Genesee.
- The Weddle family and servants sailed from England in thier own ship in 1834, and eventually settled in the Rochester paint and trade.
- In 1863, the house was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Joe French; Rochester newspapers noted the frequent entertainment at the French home.
- In 1871, the house was purchased by Thomas Button, a hairdresser, and at his death it went to his housekeeper whom he had adopted.
- The Urban Renewal Plan approved in 1966 the site of the house for clearance.
- The Landmark Society urged the Urban renewal Agency to delay demolition until the site was needed for redevelopment, and meanwhile worked to find a new owner who would move it.
- The current owners, the Rayburns, were looking for an old house to purchase and restore in their favorite style- Greek Revival.
- The Landmark Society suggested this house and negotiations were underway to procure a lot and move the structure.
- In November, 1982/3(?), the house was moved to its current location.
