History:
- Emmet Hollister, a lumber mechant, built this house in 1863-1864 for his large family.
- The family lived here until 1881 when theH. Austin Brewster, a wholesale grocer and later a cold storage proprietor, puchased the property.
- The Brewster family lived here until 1904.
- Edward Higgins, who was in the livery business, bought the house and his descendants owned it for over 25 years.
Style and Features:
- This imposing structure is such a fine example of the Italian Villa that it has been designated a city landmark.
- The square tower with a wide-eaved hip roof, bracketed eaves, Roman-arched hood with carved consoles, and the vestibule and foyer with multi-colored tile floors make this structure unique.
- A stain glass skylight surmounts the curving staircase.
- The upstairs apartment was converted from the former dining room and library, but it still retains the marble and marquetry fireplaces, parquet floors, bay window, and dark stained woodwork and paneling.
