History:
- This distinguished example ofthe mid-19th century transition form the classic to the romantic style is notable for its rich details drawing from Islamic, Egyptian, and Italian influence.
- The house was built in 1849 for Henry A Brewster, a Rochester Insurance Agent.
- In 1886 the property was conveyed to the William Burke family who occupied it until early in this century.
- Subsequent occupants included the Rochester Public Health Nursing Association and the Rochester Institute of Technology Graphic Arts School.
- The Landmark Society purchased the property in 1970 to ensure its preservation as well as to protect its neighbor, the Jonathan Child House.
- The same year that it was designated a city landmark by the Rochester Preservation Board, it was listed in the National Register as a historic district.
- The house now serves as the Landmark Society headquarters and houses the John Wenrich Library.
