84 Adams Street
- History:
- Built in the early 1870s for Henry G. Spurr, a forwarding merchant, this fine Italian Villa style house underwent a series of conversions to multiple residences in the 1920s.
- A rear addition was constructed, raising the number of dwelling units to 9.
- The present owner is Chris Soderstrom ,a Landmark Society trustee, is responsible for renovating the 1920s additions, which have been rehabilitated as 3 apartments.
- Style and Features:
- This Italian Villa style house features a front hall with a decorative ceiling medallion and a curved staircase.
- The restored banister and newel post were salvages from another Third Ward house and installed by the owners.
- The spacious living room has two marble fireplaces and refinished wood flooring. The "tin" ceilings (actually embossed steel), are an interesting feature worth retaining.
- In 1981, a cupola was designed, constructed, and lifted into place on top of the house.
- Also, the exterior brick was cleaned, repaired, and repainted.
