CAPITAL PUNISHMENT. - Mr. Bevongen says, in his report to the French
government, that the punishment of death had been abolished in Tuscany for twenty-five
years; and that it had so improved the character of the people, that the prisons were
empty; only five murders had been committed in the kingdom for twenty years after the
abolishment of that punishment.
