A CURIOUS CALCULATION. - The total loss, by the late fire in this city, is
estimated at $6,000,000, at the least. The duration of the conflagration, was about eight
hours. The average loss was of course $750,000 per hour,-$3,125 per minute; and $52,
per second. Thus it appears that the average destruction of property for the space of eight
hours was equal to what would have been done by four men with shovels at shovelling a
heap of silver dollars from one of the piers, or from the deck of a vessel into the sea.
