B. - High-duty Apparatus.

1. Machines for Sugar-Works.-Fig. 132 represents the blowing and exhausting machine used in the large German sugar-works for injecting carbonic acid into the defecating apparatus. The air-cylinder is in line with the steam-cylinder, the piston-rods being connected and guided as shown. The diameter of the air-piston varies according to the power of the machine from 17.5 to 31.2 inches, the stroke generally being equal to the diameter. The revolutions vary from 35 to 60 per minute. The valve-mechanism is clearly shown in the engraving.
